Installment I: THROUGH THE WORLDGATE

Raven's been dead a long time. He's a vampire, a war hero, and a legend. He's an agent with what, for him, started out as a pretty easy assignment. But now things have changed and he has to start following the rules. He's not good at following the rules.

Valerie Winn is a young agent on her first assignment. She has a lot to learn about being a field agent, and about the undead legend she's assigned to help. For what it's worth, she's a lot better at following the rules than Raven is.

But both have something to learn about the heart. The heart makes its own rules.

Monterey Shorts 2: More in the Line -- Best Book Nomination!

Monterey Shorts 2: More on the Line in the Running for Foreword Magazine's 2005 Best Book of the Year

The little-known Fiction Writers of the Monterey Peninsula (FWOMP) are taking on the literary world. Their latest title, Monterey Shorts 2: More on the Line, has been nominated by Foreword Magazine as a 2005 Best Book of the Year finalist. Competition includes such luminaries as Oxford University Press and Texas Tech University Press. "It's an honor for our self-publishing effort to be mentioned in the same breath with some of the big boys," says FWOMP chairman and co-founder Byron Merritt.

The book, one of nine finalists, was selected from over 1,540 entries in the 2005 "Anthologies" category. Winning titles will be announced during a ceremony at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. on Friday, May 19th, 2006 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.

This is the second such recognition for FWOMP, as they were chosen as a finalist in the USABOOKNEWS.com Best Books of 2005.

Monterey Shorts 2: More on the Line is FWOMP's second anthology. It contains twenty short works of fiction by the ten-member group, all of them set in and around Monterey Bay. Their first collection, Monterey Shorts, was released in October 2002 and has gone onto its second printing. That anthology contains ten fictional short stories which also take place in the region.

By doubling the amount of included stories and including improved graphics, Monterey Shorts 2 ups the ante significantly over its predecessor. The book is a familiar sight in Monterey-area bookstores and was the "#5 Local Bestseller" the week of June 5th, 2005 according to the Monterey County Herald.

Interested parties can meet the FWOMP authors at area events, including Pacific Grove, California's "Good Old Days".

Lightning, Stars, & Awakenings

Hello Readers,

I'd like to pass along a few items of interest that have crossed my desk in the last week or so--most notably this first one which I've been waiting for since the outcome could have affected many of us independent and self-published authors who utilize Lightning Source as our printer:

Lightning Source wins ODMC court case
LaVergne, TN - Lightning Source Inc., a division of Ingram Industries Inc. and the leading provider of demand-based book manufacturing and distribution solutions to the book industry, learned today that it has prevailed after successfully appealing a patent infringement lawsuit.

Lightning Source was informed that the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit reversed the St. Louis District Court judgment of infringement and vacated the damages award. The opinion was unanimous in finding that "no reasonable jury could find infringement on the correct claim construction." No payment will be required for alleged damages cited in the lawsuit, originally filed by the On Demand Machine Corporation.
